Beginning in 1924 with the construction of their historic headquarters building in Washington, DC, the National Academy of Sciences has been an advocate for the arts; particularly when art intersects science. The building has an impressive collection of murals, sculpture and other artwork and is open to the public from 9:00 to 5:00 weekdays. The Academy’s more modern Keck Center has a striking lobby which explores subjects such as biology, medicine, astronomy, the environment and engineering on imposing, engraved granite murals.
Taking their commitment a step further, the Academy’s Cultural Program is a great community amenity. It offers visitors a vibrant program that includes not only art exhibitions but also concerts, films, salons, and other special events.
